Maserati Grecale: Which Used Version Actually Adds Up
A fast-growing UK parc and three very different powertrains. Our first-party data on price, retention, reliability and running costs shows which Grecale makes sense.
View the Maserati Grecale data profile →The Maserati Grecale is arriving on the used market in numbers: 1,275 are now taxed on UK roads, up 29.6% — a rise of 291 cars. That growth matters, because it means genuine choice for used buyers and a better chance of specialist support and parts. And there is a real reason to look. At a new price around £80,000, the Grecale holds 64% of its value after three years, beating 70% of comparable models in our value-retention index — a strong result for an exclusive Italian SUV. The catch is that 'the Grecale' is really three quite different cars, and our data separates them clearly.
The Modena mHEV is the version that adds up

The mild-hybrid Modena is the sensible entry point at a typical £51,200 used after three years — comfortably the cheapest way in. It makes 330PS, returns 28 mpg (the best of the three) and sits in insurance group 30, the lowest across the range. Owners agree: the mild-hybrid petrol suits most buyers, with the other two reserved for those who specifically want pace or electric drive. This is the Grecale that behaves most like a normal premium SUV to run.
The Trofeo V6 is the fastest and the dearest to own
The Trofeo is the hot one, and it prices like it — a typical £79,400 used after three years, barely below the range's new figure, so retention here does you no favours. Its 530PS twin-turbo V6 is the draw, but running costs are steep: 24 mpg, the worst in the range, and insurance group 40, the highest here. It also compounds the wear items below — its pace and weight chew through tyres and brakes faster than the Modena. Treat it as an occasional-use car, not a daily driver.
The Folgore EV is the wildcard with a real range caveat
The all-electric Folgore is the most powerful Grecale at 557PS, a typical £72,700 used after three years, with insurance group 38 sitting between the other two. It returns 2.7 mi/kWh and is ULEZ compliant, but the number to watch is its 230-mile range — modest for a premium electric SUV at this money, and enough to rule it out for regular long trips. For urban and suburban use it makes a genuine case; for high daily mileage that range figure is the deal-breaker.
Reliability: strong score, but read the small print
The Grecale scores 82 for reliability, better than 78% of comparable models — a strong showing. But be honest about the basis: it is a composite drawn from 1,448 tests at medium confidence, so treat it as indicative rather than settled. The known faults are mostly wear items: tyres and wheels at £80–£500 between 30k and 60k miles, brakes at £150–£500 over the same window, and driver's-view issues (cameras, sensors, glass) at £60–£300 under 30k miles. The honest advice from owners is to buy on full service history and a specialist inspection — this is not a car to take a chance on.
The verdict: which Grecale to buy
For most buyers the Modena mHEV at £51,200 is the Grecale that adds up: cheapest to buy, best on economy at 28 mpg, cheapest to insure at group 30. But go in clear-eyed. This is a car bought on style and exclusivity — it shares engineering with the Alfa Stelvio yet feels plusher — and it is pricier to run than the German rivals. Our index makes that concrete: the range ranks in only the 33rd percentile on economy and the 22nd on insurance. The growing parc gives you choice; the running costs are what to scrutinise hardest before you sign.
